Jimmy and I played baseball together in Cumberland - we were battery mates - he was the catcher and I pitched. His catcher's mitt was worn out and my dad made a sponge to fit inside to soften the pitches. He was a good friend, a good athlete and I am sure a good Marine. I will always remember you, Jimmy - Semper Fi - your old team mate - Neub

A Note from The Virtual Wall

Pfc James O. Arrowood of Cumberland, Maryland, is claimed by the 2/9 Marines Association as one of their own - but he almost certainly is not.

On 13 September 1968 the 2/9 Marines were operating around the Rockpile in northern Quang Tri Province, just south of the Demilitarized Zone. On that day, according to the casualty database, Pfc Arrowood was killed in action in Quang Nam Province, a hundred miles or more south of where the 2/9 Marines were located.

Four other Marines were killed in actions in Quang Nam Province on 13 Sep 1968 ... and it seems likely that Pfc Arrowood was in one of the three units involved:

  • Pfc Arley G. Abraham, Madison, WV, L Co, 3rd Bn, 5th Marines
  • Pvt Eugene J. Feeley, Boston, MA, L Co, 3rd Bn, 5th Marines
  • Pfc Melvin R. Long, Topeka, KS, F Co, 2nd Bn, 7th Marines
  • Pfc James D. Wardlow, Belton, TX, G Co, 2nd Bn, 5th Marines

Update

Since the Note above was written The Virtual Wall has obtained a service record extract for Pfc Arrowood. The 2/9 Marines are entirely correct; it is the casualty database which is in error.

While the 2/9 Marines' Command Chronology for Sep 1968 doesn't contain the names of their dead, it does say they had seven men killed in action and one who died of wounds. The eight men in order of their deaths were

  • Died of Wounds, 02 Sep:
Pfc Norman J. Chaney, Lynwood, CA, Golf 2/9

  • Killed in action 05 Sep:
Pfc Thomas Lane, Lincolnton, GA, Fox 2/9

  • Killed in action 09 Sep:
Pfc Perry S. Whisenant, Cocoa, FL, H&S 2/9

  • Killed in action 13 Sep:
Pfc James O. Arrowood, Cumberland, MD, Fox 2/9
Pfc Gary L. Smith, Cleveland, OH, Fox 2/9

  • Killed in action 24 Sep:
SSgt Willard F. Morelock, Kingsport, TN, Hotel 2/9
LCpl Allen W. Ingram, San Manuel, AZ, Hotel 2/9
Pfc William T. Davis, Crab Orchard, WV, Hotel 2/9
