Jimmy and I played baseball together in Cumberland - we were battery mates - he was the catcher and I pitched. His catcher's mitt was worn out and my dad made a sponge to fit inside to soften the pitches. He was a good friend, a good athlete and I am sure a good Marine. A Note from The Virtual WallPfc James O. Arrowood of Cumberland, Maryland, is claimed by the 2/9 Marines Association as one of their own - but he almost certainly is not.On 13 September 1968 the 2/9 Marines were operating around the Rockpile in northern Quang Tri Province, just south of the Demilitarized Zone. On that day, according to the casualty database, Pfc Arrowood was killed in action in Quang Nam Province, a hundred miles or more south of where the 2/9 Marines were located. Four other Marines were killed in actions in Quang Nam Province on 13 Sep 1968 ... and it seems likely that Pfc Arrowood was in one of the three units involved:

The 2/9 Marines are entirely correct; it is the casualty database which is in error.While the 2/9 Marines' Command Chronology for Sep 1968 doesn't contain the names of their dead, it does say they had seven men killed in action and one who died of wounds.
