To honor a man who died so young at Ia Drang. John and I were junior high school classmates in Kalamazoo, Michigan, before he later moved to Gary, Indiana. I did not know him well, but our lockers were right next to each other in gym class. We always exchanged "good mornings" before heading out to gym class. I lost track of John and started high school, and then learned that he had died at Ia Drang. I was shocked. He was a young man with his whole life ahead of him. He made the supreme sacrifice for all of us. I pay tribute to him, and he is remembered by me always. He is mentioned in Harold Moore's great book on Ia Drang. He was not left behind. He was a soldier once, and young. Rest in peace.
