George was born in Battle Creek, Michigan on February 25, 1948. He had 2 older brothers. At some point in the boys young years, they relocated to Southwest Florida, living in Fort Myers and Naples. George attended Naples High School where he was active in school activities. He enlisted in the Marines on 6 June 1966 in Jacksonville, with his home of record listed as Naples, Collier County, Florida. He began his tour of duty in Vietnam in late November 1966. On March 7, Company B of the 1st Battalion (known as "Walking Dead" by North Vietnamese Army), and Company E , 2d Battalion, 9th Marines, were placed under the Operational Control (OPCON) of the 3d Marine Division and were deployed to the Khe Sanh Combat Base in the Huong Hoa District of Quang Tri Province. On the night of March 16 into March 17 on the northern defense perimeter in the vicinity of Hill 861S, Company E came under mortar attack by a large NVA force as the Marines began to move their night patrol base to a new location. Company B reacted and joined in the battle and when the battle subsided, The Marines had suffered nineteen men killed in action, and fifty eight wounded. Two of would later die of their wounds. After less than one year of service, 6 Kilometers W-NW of KHE SANH Airfield, Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam, while in action against hostile forces, Pfc Johnson died "as a result of fragmentation wounds to abdomen and lower back from a hostile explosive device". Local area papers in Michigan and Florida reported his death and funeral in articles like below. He was survived by his mother Shirley Jean (Long) Johnson (1924-2001), and two brothers. He was preceded in death by his father Budd Elbert Johnson (1917-1966). Pfc Johnson is buried, along with his mother at Naples Memorial Gardens Cemetery, North Naples, Collier County, Florida. His father, also a Navy Veteran of WWII, is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan. - - The Virtual Wall, 29 May 2020
