Charles and I went to the NCO Academy at Fort Benning, Georgia in 1968 together as part of the 25th class, 85th Company. We graduated June 4, 1968 and went to Fort Polk together as young buck sergeants. While at Fort Polk, Charles and I became closer than lots of brothers. We shared every aspect of each other's lives to include our families. Our next assignment took us to Long Binh, Vietnam. On our journey from our homes to Vietnam, I remember Charles calling home several times from almost every stopover we had. I told him that he seemed to be making a lot of calls considering that we would only be gone for a few months. He replied that he just had to hear their voices one more time before we went to Vietnam. Charles and I were finally separated at the Long Binh processing center. I was assigned to the Big Red One (1st Infantry Division) and Charles was assigned to the 1st Air Cav. We hugged as we departed, and vowed to write to each other every week or so. We faithfully kept in touch until I received one of my letters to Charles back with a reply note from the Army that Charles had died on 12/04/68. I truly lost my closest friend that day and I will always love and miss him. I knew at that time that God had directed Charles to make all those phone calls to all his loved ones on the journey over to Vietnam for one final connection with them. I named my son William in memory of William Charles Williams. I have been blessed to talk by phone to his son Chuck and I pray that some day our two sons can meet. I just know that Charles would like that to happen as much as I would. God bless you, my Vietnam Brother.
