I served in VietNam with Mike until his death in Feb 1967. These two pictures of him were taken shortly before his death.

"Friends Die Too"

In a war torn country far away,
a good friend of mine was killed the other day.
I didn't know him very long,
but I knew him pretty well.
You make friends pretty fast I learned,
when you're living while in hell.
Sometimes you make a friend today,
and tomorrow he is gone.
That's how it is in war you see,
you live from dawn to dawn.
You grow up fast in war that way,
the boy has left you in just one day.

You fight and kill and ask yourself why,
but the only answer is someone must die.
Michael L. Utley was that friend of mine,
who went home asleep in a box made of pine.
He was small in size but a very big man,
and I hope someday we will meet again.
So let's not rage and shout for war,
'cause remember if you do
You may kill your so-called enemy,
but "Friends Die Too"

This poem is dedicated to the memory of Michael L. Utley, a friend with whom I served until his death on February 22nd, 1967. Never to be forgotten, may he rest in peace.
