Charlie was an interesting fellow. I understand that he graduated from Harvard in 3 years. I recall him in the classes on various military subjects, reading something other than what was being instructed. It always amazed me that he could do that and still "ace" the tests. Unfortunately, this may have been his undoing, since those with the highest grades in the company were assigned to Military Occupational Specialties that required officers who were a "cut above" in intelligence. Artillery was one of those MOS's. I always thought that the USMC would have been better served by having Charlie in a more "organizational" MOS such as supply or communications. It was a sad loss for everyone. You may see the circumstances of the loss in "Ambush Valley" by Eric Hammel, pages 69-70. While he is not specifically named, the author and a fellow Lt. confirm that the FO mentioned is Charlie.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

On 07 and 10 Sep 1967 the men of the 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines, fought two bitter battles along the main supply route between Cam Lo and Con Thien, just below the Demilitarized Zone. At least 56 Marines and sailors died in the fighting.

The fight on 07 Sep 1967 took place in and around a churchyard and cost the lives of no less than 20 Americans:
