Richard is my nephew, the son of my half-brother Geronimo and Maria Ruiz, and we were raised together after the death of my father and mother. He was tall, handsome, and had a very good sense of humor. We planned to enter the Army together as buddies after graduation, but he must of felt a call and went in four months earlier that I did. He loved his large family but he was also torn by a love of country and patriotism. I think of him often and know that our family misses him very much but is very proud of him.

In the words of Anna H. Shaw,

"We have not always reached the goal toward which we have striven, but in the hour of our greatest disappointment we could always point to our battlefield and say: 'There we fought our good fight, there we defended the principles for which our ancestors and yours laid down their lives; there is our battlefield for justice, equality and freedom. Where is yours?'"
