Sam and I were together for Navy Boot Camp at Great Lakes, Illinois. We went to Navy Hospital Corps School together and later to Field Medical Medical School at Camp LeJeune, NC.

After the school we both were assigned to the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. During this time at Portsmouth Sam went home with me for a weekend at my home in Pennington Gap, Virginia. We became good friends over the years.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

The 7th Marines' operations log for 19 May 1968 contains an entry reporting the 3rd Bn's command post at Dai Loc received 82mm mortar fire which resulted in two men wounded badly enough to require evacuation. Other records indicate that both men died from their injuries:
  • Cpl Harold Moore, Detroit, Michigan, Lima Company, and
  • HN Samuel H. Rodriquez, Wendell, Idaho, H&S Company
