The database page for Sylvester Roach
Sylvester was very dedicated to his mother. He had served in a non-combat position before being assigned to the 134th Assault Helicopter Company. He wanted to serve in combat before ending his tour in Vietnam. He got his wish as a door-gunner. Roach (as he was called) went on numerous missions. He was known throughout the company. His family and friends were his greatest concern. He wanted to make them proud. He will always be remembered as one of the few black door gunners. He frequently rode as a crew member on a slick (UH-1H) affectionately named "Hochie." Roach, rest in peace. Sylvester Roach served during the most hostile period of the war (based on the number of casualties). He is remembered for his tenacity and endurance in times of great stress and demand.
