The photo and following article is taken from The Philadelphia Inquirer, on September 25, 1968.

A North Philadelphia neighborhood gave a quiet testimonial Tuesday for a Marine killed in Vietnam.

Flags flew at half staff on many houses in the vicinity of Ingersoll and Taney Streets for Marine Lance Corporal Harry E. Rivers, 19, son of Mrs. Bartholomew Nelson, 1320 N. Taney St. Signs in windows of neighborhood homes declared, "In loving memory of Harry".

Lance Corporal Rivers volunteered to go to Vietnam thus granting his younger brother, Levi, 18, military immunity from Vietnam service. But Levi, who is also in the Marines, subsequently waived the immunity and was also assigned to the battle area.

On September 16, Harry Rivers was killed during an enemy mortar attack in Quang Tri Province. He had been in Vietnam six weeks. He is survived by another brother and his parents.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

In September 1968 elements of the Battalion Landing Team built around the 2nd Battalion, 26th Marines, were at Landing Zone Margo in the Cam Lo River valley about 13 miles due west of Cam Lo itself. On 15, 16, and 17 September LZ Margo was subjected to severe mortar attacks, losing 29 men. Ten of the dead were from Echo 2/26 - one on the 15th, seven on the 16th, and two on the 17th:
