My hope and prayer is that everyone know and love our country for what she really is and what she stands for. May we nurture her strengths and strengthen her weaknesses so that she will always be a "Land of the Free, and Home of the Brave."

From his nephew,
Jimmie E Rhoden Jr.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

The following entry is taken from the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines' Command Chronology for May 1967:

The "40mm vehicle" was an M-42 "Duster", a tracked vehicle equipped with dual 40mm anti-aircraft cannons. Translated, the entry says that at 2:50 pm Lima 3/3 reported a Duster overturned on Highway QL-9 about 2 kilometers south-southeast of the Ca Lu airfield. By 3:55 pm three injured Marines had been medevaced. By 5:05 pm a recovery vehicle had lifted the Duster off four men pinned beneath it - one Marine and three soldiers. The four men killed in the accident were

  • L Co, 3rd Bn, 3rd Marines
  • C Btry, 1st Bn, 44th Artillery
    • SSG Thomas C. Evans, Bessemer, AL
    • SGT Franklin C. Lewis, Canton, NY
    • PFC Talmadge Rhoden, Jacksonville, FL
