A Note from The Virtual Wall In late 1967 and January 1968 US Army units from the southern Provinces were moved into the southern I Corps area, which in turn allowed the Marines to move forces north into Quang Tri and Thua Thien Provinces. Although the troop movements were a reaction to intelligence reports which forecast increased NVA activity in those Provinces, particularly around Khe Sanh, no-one expected what arrived at the end of January 1968: the Tet Offensive, an all-out NVA/VC attack on South Vietnam's cities. The 4th Infantry Division's 3rd Brigade moved north in response to the NVA/VC attacks, and its maneuver battalions soon were engaged. On 09 Feb the 1st Bn, 35th Infantry found itself in a bitter fight on Goi No Island, an inland island bounded by rivers. The area was located just a few miles southwest of Danang, and Goi No had proven itself to be both a hotbed of NVA/VC activity and a difficult problem. 1/35 was inserted in order to locate and destroy enemy elements which could be brought to bear on the Danang area. The 09 Feb fight, which took place at Cam Lau Nam hamlet, about 7 kilometers southwest of Dien Ban, was costly to both sides, with 18 US soldiers killed in action and 3 more dying of wounds received there.
