On July 18, 1966, at the age of 19 John Thomas Kyser perished in the service of our country in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam.

Our memorial to John is a quote taken from the Illinois Veterans Cemetery:

"FOR THOSE WHO FOUGHT FOR IT,
FREEDOM HAS A FLAVOR THE PROTECTED WILL NEVER KNOW"

PFC Kyser's name is engraved on a plaque which hangs in the Company command post of Combat Engineer Company, Combat Assault Battalion, 3d Marine Division on Camp Schwab, Okinawa, Japan.

CEC was Company C, 3d Engineer Battalion, and is the only part of the Battalion which has not been deactivated.
