17 Sep 2006 17 Sep 2006 The photo and article appeared in The Philadelphia Inquirer on October 4, 1966: Pfc. Lawrence F. Kinnear, 18, of 948 Township Line Rd., Elkins Park. Kinnear, who had wanted to be a Marine since he was 14, was killed September 26 near Quang Tri. Kinnear had written to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Kinnear, recently that he was not seeing much fighting in Vietnam. He had spent several days in the field hospital in July after being wounded. His parents were notified of his death Friday. He died on the first birthday of his sister, Michelle. He also is survived by three brothers, Raphael, 19, who is serving in the Army; Thomas, 16, and Sidney, 12. The boy's parents said he left Abington High School after his 17th birthday to enlist in the Marine Corps. During his 18 months in the service, he spent some time in Okinawa before going to Vietnam in March. He had volunteered to go to the Far East. SEMPER FIDELIS, MARINE! A Note from The Virtual Wall Between 22 Sep and 07 Oct 1966 the 3rd Bn, 4th Marines was engaged in Operation PRAIRIE, a sweep of northern Quang Tri Province. 3/4's area of operations began with the Rockpile and continued north to the DMZ boundary. On 27 and 28 Sep Kilo 3/4 fought a series of small-unit engagements as they moved along the crest of the ridgeline.
