I knew Lt. Kelly as he was my first Division Officer (A-Division) on Board the USS Constellation (CVA-64) in 1962 and I had the greatest respect for him. He was a real Naval Officer and was respected by everyone around him. I learned of his death from reading Navy Times while I was a civilian living in New Mexico. I re-enlisted in the Navy in 1967 and I will never forget Lt. Kelly.

From one of his A Dision Boat Shop (A-4) personnel,

A Note from The Virtual Wall

APL-55

APL-55/YRBM-18

APL-55 was constructed in World War II as a non-self-propelled barracks ship. In Vietnam she served as a "mother ship" for the riverine forces, primarily in the Mekong River delta area but also further north in both the Chu Lai and Danang areas. About midway through her Vietnam service APL-55 was redesignated as YRBM-18; this photo was taken after the redesignation (note the numerals "18" on her bow).
