Griffin, who enlisted in the Army in September 1964, confided in his last letter home from Vietnam that "I'm trying very hard to stay alive and get back home". The private first class, a rifleman assigned to Company C of the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry, 173rd Airborne Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, died one week before Christmas Day 1965. He was 18 years old. Survivors included his father, two brothers and two sisters.
