11 Nov 2007 Alan and I grew up together as next-door neighbors. We went to Forest Hills High School and, in 1954 when we turned seventeen we enlisted in the Armed Services; Alan in the Marine Corps Reserves, and I in the Navy Reserves. Then, after we graduated college, Alan and I went on active duty. Alan served two separate tours in combat in Vietnam, both voluntary, and I sailed destroyers in the Atlantic, Med and Persian Gulf. Alan lost his life defending his Platoon in 1968. Alan was a great guy, a real friend, and has merited my tears at the Memorial and my thoughts throughout the years. We both turned seventy this year, and I don't want any more time to pass without testifying to Alan's character, patriotism and devotion to duty. Alan had no chance to live a full life, and as I have been blessed to live mine, in peace with my family, and with gratitude to Alan and all who have given their lives and bodies in defense of our Country. A Note from The Virtual Wall Staff Sergeant Gelb was a combat photographer assigned to Service Company, HQ Bn, 3rd Marine Division. On 18 May 1968 he was in the field with Hotel Company, 2/26 Marines. The 2/26 Command Chronology contains the following entry: The two men killed in this incident were SSgt Gelb and Pfc Nathan White of Charleston, SC, Hotel 2/26. Their bodies were recovered on 20 May 1968.
