Robert was my next door neighbor. He was older than me. While I was in basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, I received a letter from my mother telling about Robert being killed in Vietnam. It was much later after returning home that I came to find out we had served in the same division, he in the 16th Infantry and me in the 2nd Infantry. Robert was the eldest son in a large family and his was a great loss to his family and the community. My personal loss was the hero I knew growing up, and the soldier who went before me and gave his life if only to inspire mine.

I would have loved to meet my Uncle Bobby but he died 10 years before I was born. I'm writing this just to say how proud I am of my uncle.

I'm writing this in memory of my uncle Bobby. I never got to meet him, but he has inspired me to do something great. I am now following his footsteps. I have joined the Army. I want to do what he has done. To let him know that a nephew he never met is very proud of him. Well, there is nothing much more to say, but some day we will meet and it will be the best day of my life.
