The database page for Ray Leonard Ferry
I was with Ray when he died at Khe Sanh. We were unloading old 106mm rounds in the ammo dump when an NVA mortar round landed a few feet away. The old ammo absorbed most of the shrapnel. Six of us were wounded and a single piece struck Ray in the chest and pierced his heart. I can still see him laying beside me gasping for breath and trying to get up before he collapsed and died. Ray was my best friend at Khe Sanh. He was only 18 years old. He had the ability to make even the worst of times during the siege bearable with his sense of humor. I have a picture of him hanging in my room and every day when I look at it I think of how lucky I am to have known him.
