12 Oct 2006 Ned, Forgive me for not finding this web site earlier. It's been 39 years since I last saw you in Nam. They asked for volunteers for Recon when we got to DaNang so we were separated. You went to the grunts and I went to Recon. I remember our time in boot camp at PI and ITR at LeJeune. You didn't have time to go home for Christmas so I took you, Coughlan, Gothier and McLaughlin home with me. We had a nice time over the holidays before shipping out to San Diego. We didn't even have time to say good-bye at DaNang because eveything was so hectic. I contacted your parents when I returned from Nam and they informed me that you were killed in action. I guess I just filed that in the back of my mind with everything from Nam, not really wanting to accept it. We got a kick out of your jokes. I sat down to write this and I could not stop the tears. I've thought about you a lot over the years and still laugh at some of the jokes you told. I'm posting a picture your parents sent me that they took about 10 days before you left for boot camp. A Note from The Virtual Wall In April 1967 Fox 2/1 manned an outpost on a hill at Nui Loc Son, running daily (and nightly) patrols to deny the valley below to the enemy. On 21 Apr 1967, most of the company set out on a daylight patrol that took them into the village of Binh Son. As the Marines approached across the rice paddies they were ambushed by a dug-in VC Main Force battalion that enjoyed a clear line of fire across level land with little cover ... Fox 2/1 had run into a hornet's nest. Fourteen Marines were killed and 18 others wounded early in the fight, which continued until other elements of the 1st Marines and the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, arrived and flanked the VC from their fortifications.
