11 Sep 2003 On 08 March 1970, 1st Lt Joe Devlin launched with Major Fred Locke as his copilot on a logistics flight to the area known as "The Coal Mines". As they crossed the village of Dai Loc, where Route 4 crosses the Song Ai Nghia river southwest of Da Nang, Lt Devlin was hit in the neck by one AK-47 round. This round killed Joe instantly and ricocheted through the cockpit, hitting Major Locke in the right wrist. Although wounded, Major Locke managed to recover the aircraft and fly it to a helo pad at the Naval Support Activity, Da Nang. Joe Devlin, and the other Purple Foxes who served in Vietnam, are remembered by the women who waited at home, whether mothers, sisters, wives, daughters, or friends. Those women, the continue to support today's Purple Foxes of HMM-364 as they serve our country.
