Remembering
Charles William Davis
Corporal, United States Marine Corps
Front Royal, Virginia
July 3, 1941 to July 6, 1966
Charles W Davis is on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial,
panel 08E line 134.
He went by the name of "Sonny" Davis (same nickname as mine) but everyone on
the football team called him "Bongo" (I remember him by using Bongo40 as my
screen name). He couldn't run very fast as he was big & clumsy and we tried
to get him fired up & angry on the field but we never did - his good-natured
disposition wouldn't allow it.
He was the butt of many jokes but I remember he always
took it
in stride and never got angry at anyone. He was killed 3 months before I went
to
Vietnam - and I didn't even know it until several years later. An old
girlfriend of mine
who lives in Manassas Virginia gave me a Wall rubbing of Sonny's name - and
since
then I often think of him.
He was, in retrospect, a rarity of sorts - a
genuinely decent
human being who harbored absolutely no hate or animosity for anyone.
Rest in
peace Sonny -
