Dennis was a happy-go-lucky guy who we all thought caught a break when he was transferred to a job in the rear. However, as we went afloat and things became very desperate with a huge shortage of men Dennis voluntered to come back out into the field when he could have stayed in the relative security of the rear battalion area. He was highly respected and regarded as one of us and put his life on the line for all of us in Mike 3/1. He was always smiling and seemed really too good of a person to be a combat Marine. He was a very good Marine and displayed his grit and determination each time we would go into battle. The day Dennis was killed we all were so very sad. Top Woodard and I carried your body back to friendly lines even under heavy fire - we did not give a second thought to not bringing you back. Both of us cried like babies. Although Top was a WW-II and Korean combat vet and myself an old salt it still hurt to lose you. We will never forget you nor allow others to forget you and others who have given their lives for the noble cause that we were sent. Your sacrifice and your families will be held in honor by all who loved and served with you. Each company reunion we read the names out loud of those as yourself that died in the service of Mike 3/1 as well as those who have died since. God bless you those like you and your families forever.

Brother, Although our lives never crossed in this life, I look forward to meeting you in the next one. Save a seat for me. I served in Phu Bai 69 to 70. I came home but you stayed in Nam. I know you're in glory now. See ya soon.

A Note from The Virtual WallIn late 1967, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, and reinforcing elements formed Battalion Landing Team 3/1 embarked in the amphibious warfare ships of Task Force 76.5 [(USS Valley Forge (LPH 8), USS Navarro (APA 215), USS Alamo (LSD 33), USS Whetstone (LSD 27), and USS Vernon County (LST 1161)]. BLT 3/1 provided an amphibious and airmobile ready reserve force for the 3rd Marine Amphibious Force and found themselves heavily committed during the TET 68 offensive.During operations ashore between 25 Jan and 08 Feb 1968, the 3/1 Marines lost at least 42 men; of these, not less than thirteen were Mike Company casualties:
