A Note from The Virtual Wall

On Sunday, 16 May 1965, a group of B-57B bombers were loaded for a strike mission. At 0815 as the aircrews manned and started their aircraft a 750 pound bomb loaded aboard the lead aircraft detonated. Shrapnel and bits of aircraft hit the other B-57s, causing a chain of explosions along the flight line. By the time ground crews got the conflagration under control, 26 men were dead and numerous aircraft destroyed - 10 B-57Bs, a Navy F-8E, a USAF A-1E, and two VNAF A-1Hs. In addition, 31 other aircraft received greater or lesser degrees of damage.

Airman 1st Class William T. Crawford was one of the 26 dead.
