Tom was my deputy in Huong My District, Kien Hoa province. On the morning of Aug 8, 1970 I had planned to go out on an operation. The VC had mortared the district headquarters the preceeding night and we were going out to find them. Just before I was out the door, my counterpart, Major Da, told me he was going to the northern part of the district, and to send Tom in my stead. While we were up north, I lost radio contact with Tom; we went back, called in help, but it was too late. Tom and the whole group were ambushed. Tom was dead, his Sergeant was seriously wounded, the Vietnamese were decimated. Tom left behind a girlfriend he planned to marry. He gave his life for mine, literally. I will never forget him. May his soul rest in Peace.
