Monte was from Kermit, Texas, but grew up all over West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. Kermit is an oilfield town just south of the New Mexico State Line. He was born in San Angelo, Texas, and was a 1966 graduate of Kermit High School. He was an Golden Gloves boxer and he won the Sportsmanship Trophy two years in a row at the Regionals held in Odessa, Texas. He always wanted to be paratrooper, he once jumped from a water tower using only a large silk handkerchief. He died as he charged the enemy in an attempt to save a wounded buddy. He is remembered by his community and by the Permian Basin Vietnam Memorial located at the Midland International Airport.
