The name "Collins" is synonymous with swimming during Moke's four years at the Academy. Smashing the Plebe spring record, he methodically continued to lower the Varsity records during his upper-class years. Despite his confessed hatred of all things academic, he was on the Superintendents' list his last three years and won stars his Second Class year. His theory that women were an accessory and not a necessity - "They are good for holding towels and trophies" - was a constant source of anguish for countless gals and much amusement for his roommates. Although from Martinez, California, he visited Cape Town, South Africa as his father worked there during Mike's academy days. Mike will join the Marine Corps following his graduation.
Michael Raymond Collins USNA 1964 - Obituary in May, 1971 "Shipmate" - Lt Michael Raymond Collins, USN, was killed in action in South Vietnam on 4 March. Funeral services were held in the U. S. Naval Amphibious Base Chapel, Coronado. Internment was in Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery. A native of Concord, CA, he was a 1964 graduate of the Naval Academy. While a midshipman, he was captain of Navy's swimming team and an All American swimmer. He placed fourth in the National Outdoor Championships in the summer of 1964 in the 100-meter freestyle. In the summer of 1970, he placed All-Navy Champion in four events. Lt Collins' career included duty in the USS John S. McCain. He was in the UDT program at the Amphibious Base, Coronado. He had been attached to SEAL Team One for three years and was platoon commander at the time of his death. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John S. Collins, c/o Del Monte Corp., 2145 Fremont St., San Francisco, CA 94105; and a brother, Raymond Dennis, of Menlo Park, Ca. |
