I knew Jim only a short while. We were in basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. in October, 1966. Jim and I were from rival high schools and attended a party together as opposing sides if you will. The next day we wound up at the same induction center being drafted into the same branch of the military. Jim and I recognized each other and became immediate friends. Our parents took turns transporting us home when we were on leave. I read about Jim while I was in Saigon, and have kept in touch with his family ever since. His mother passed just this past December, 2006. I had just sent her photos of my daughter's wedding. Jim was the finest young man and epitomized the tremendous sacrifice our country gave. He had a lot to live for, he gave it to his country. God bless him and those who served and died with him. I will remember.
