I never met this brave man, but I visit his gravesite often to pay my respects.

He was a medic for the 11th Light Infantry, and gave his life for us on February 25, 1969.

I first saw his name last year when I visited Portland's memorial to Vietnam veterans. Francis was born in Eugene, Oregon, and was only 20 when he died. I thank God daily that I am free because of all the men living or gone who gave their all.

Someday I will travel to Washington D.C. and leave flowers at the Wall for all those brave souls.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

The 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry, lost two men on 25 Feb 1969, both to gunshot wounds:
  • SP4 Francis W. Cody, Eugene, OR, Headquarters Troop, and
  • PFC James E. Scott, Gainesboro, TN, C Troop
While The Virtual Wall has not been able to determine with certainty if SP4 Cody was in the field with C Troop, it seems likely he was.

Visit John Dennison's
Medics on the Wall
memorial which honors the
Army Medics and Navy Corpsmen who died in Vietnam.
