A Note from The Virtual WallDuring March 1969 the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, was providing security for and conducting Company sweeps around Fire Support Bases Russell, Alpine, and Neville, all in Quang Tri Province. On 11 March, Golf Company encountered enemy forces at 0820 and at 1050, but the enemy did not attempt to maintain contact. That changed at 1530, when a company-size enemy force approached the 1st Platoon, G/2/4, which was at some distance from the bulk of the company, leading to an hour-long fight before the NVA withdrew.Golf 2/4 lost four men to enemy action - two by gunshot and two to an "explosive device" - and nine others were wounded. However, even worse was a stray round from the supporting artillery which hit the Golf position, killing three men and wounding four others. The seven men who died were
