A Note from The Virtual Wall

In April of 2004 the Associated Press reported on the deaths of four Arkansas National Guardsmen in Iraq. The AP report recalled Arkansas' losses in Vietnam:
"Three Arkansans were killed in action in a single day on two separate occasions during Vietnam. Sgt. Jaye Arthur Sharpe of Dermott, Lance Cpl. Richard Hall Dillon Jr. of Little Rock and Cpl. Overtis Hinton Jr. of Wynne were killed May 19, 1968. Pfc. Lesley Boling Jr. of Decatur, Spc. Don W. Bonner of Hoxie and Staff Sgt. Billy Joe Clayborn of Lamar were killed Dec. 3, 1968."

Five of the six men named above were infantrymen; the sixth was with an engineer battalion:
  • 19 May 1968:
    • Sgt Jaye A. Sharpe, Delta 4/9th Infantry
    • Cpl Overtis Hinton Jr, Alpha 1/5th Infantry
    • LCpl Richard H. Dillon Jr, Delta 1/7th Marines

  • 03 Dec 1968:
    • SSG Billy J. Clayborn, 589th Engineers
    • Sp4 Don W. Bonner, Charlie 2/12th Infantry
    • Pfc Lesley Boling Jr, Mike 3/7th Marines
A total of 588 men from Arkansas died as a result of service in Vietnam.
