Captain Chavez is one of my two adopted MIA's. I did not know him, as I was only nine days old when he became missing. His sacrifice should be remembered.

Captain Chavez was my cousin. I am an only child, as was Gary. My maternal grandmother had one sister and one brother, who died young back in the late 1800's. My grandmother had two children, my uncle who had no children and my mother. My grandmother's sister had one child, a girl named Audrey, she was Gary's mother. So as you can see it was a very small family. I am older than Gary by 8 months. I had no idea that sites like this existed. My son, Matthew, who is in the Army and stationed in the Netherlands, wanted some information on his grandfather who had had been a POW in WWII. I asked him to see if he could find out anything about my Cousin Gary. Matthew found a website that talked about Vietnam POW bracelets and he posted some information about Gary. Unfortunately he does not remember the website, however, to make a long story short Deb Erickson who had worn Gary's POW bracelet back in the 70's saw it and sent him the bracelet, which he sent on to me.

A Note from The Virtual WallOn 30 July 1970 Captains Gary A. Chavez and Donald A. Brown took off from Udorn RTAFB in RF-4C tail number 66-0436 on a night photographic reconnaissance mission in southern Laos ... and disappeared without trace. Their last known position was just east of a ridge marking the edge of the Plateau des Bolovens, about 25 miles north of Muang Fangdeng. Extensive search efforts failed to locate the aircraft wreckage or either crewman.Both men were carried as Missing in Action until the Secretary of the Air Force approved Presumptive Findings of Death 17 Oct 1973. Their remains have not been repatriated. |
