Gordon Chadwick and I were in the same Sunday School group at Hayes Barton Methodist Church in Raleigh, as was his sister Rebecca (Becky). At one point, there was an older boy in the Sunday School class who tended to pick on me a bit. He also happened to be a friend of Gordon's. I went to Gordon and let him know about my problem with his friend and he went to the boy and let him know he was not to pick on me any more. That's all it took. We were also schoolmates at Needham Broughton High School. Gordon was very active in Boy Scouts, a true Scout leader of Scout Troop 48, it later became Troop 348. He was an Eagle Scout, and a member of The Order of the Arrow. One summer, during a thunderstorm at Camp Durant Scout Camp, a camper was struck by lightning and Gordon rushed to administer artificial respiration, using the then accepted method of pressing the back and raising the elbows. In spite of Gordon's efforts to save him the camper did not recover.

I was in Washington, DC, years later and went to the Vietnam Memorial Wall and looked Gordon up in one of the thick Memorial directories and found and touched his name where it was chiseled into the black marble. Whenever I see closeup pictures of The Wall in print or on television, I always search for Gordon's name. Even if I don't see it there I know that it will forever be on THE WALL, a reminder of the price he paid for his country.
