I was a Hospital Corpsman working in the ICU in the Naval Hospital, Saint Albans, New York. I took care of Joseph when he returned from Vietnam with his wounds. After several months he succumbed to his injuries but not before we became friends. 35 years later I still think of him. Especially on Memorial Day.

A Note from The Virtual WallLance Corporal Joseph Carinci's service record indicates that he was assigned to the 1st Scout Dog Platoon, "A" Company, 1st Military Police Battalion - but the 1st Scout Dog Platoon itself was attached to the 3rd MP Battalion during most of Carinci's service. According to the 3rd MP Bn Command Chronology, he was wounded by shrapnel on 27 July, but the wounds must have been minor. The 3rd MP Bn stood down in early August 1970 and the 1st Scout Dog Platoon reverted to its parent unit on 03 Aug 1970.LCpl Carcini had returned to duty and was in the field when he was wounded on 25 August by shrapnel from a "pressure device mine" in Quang Nam Province, RVN. He was hospitalized, transferred to Camp Butler, Okinawa, and from there to the Saint Albans Naval Hospital where he died on 30 Dec 1970. Oddly, the casualty files indicate that he died from gunshot rather than shrapnel wounds. |
