I did not know Doug personally, but I was his escort from San Franciso to his final rest in Sioux City, Iowa. I remember the ride from the airport in the hearse, eventually meeting his mother at their home. The experience was emotional and one that I will never forget. On the day of the funeral, as so many did, I presented the flag to Doug's mother with a short memorized speech. I often wonder how their life went after those days. I suppose life went on for them, and I hope it was good to them beyond the loss of their son. I will never forget.
