Larry and I attended New Boston High School, New Boston, Texas. Larry was a fine young man. always laughing, full of energy and I don't ever know of him having an enemy in school. I remember his freckled face and beaming smile. He was liked by all and never was overbearing even to lower class members. He was all right. I can see with his red hair, high energy level how he would have made a first rate Marine. I served in Viet Nam 1-68 through 4-69 in I Corps, attached to the 3rd Marine Division all along the DMZ. I wish I'd been there to try and help but I understand that the land mine the trac hit was super powerful and he died instantly. Thanks, Larry, for your sacrifice and I'll never forget you. I talked to your Dad a few years back - he still looked the same. May God bless your family, and may you be resting in his arms.

My name is Dina Butler. I've never met Larry, but I feel that I know him - my husband is his brother. He talks about him all the time, and I love listening to the stories!

We just had Christmas, and Dorothy (Larry's Mom) took out two letters from Larry while he was overseas. If I didn't know him before, I knew him after that.

He loved his wife, kids, and his country, and he was taking care of them all when he was killed.

My husband and his brothers (there are 5) haven't seen their nephews since Larry was killed, and I'd like to be one of the ones who help find them, so if anyone out there has any information leading to this, please let me know at this address - bassplayeriou@yahoo.com

Sincerely,
from his sister-in-law,
Dina Butler

A Note from The Virtual Wall

It's unclear when Sergeant Butler was wounded, but the 3rd AMTRAC Bn Command Chronology for August 1968 notes that
"At 281400H [2 pm, 28 August] at coord 054704 while on resupply run B-12 lead vehicle in a column of two detonated est 75-100lb pressure type mine. Set up security, searched area for additional mines, finding one more mine, and possibly more in area, and called for medevac. ... Three (3) USMC medevac""

The B-12 AmTrac was a Bravo Company vehicle, and within days two Marines assigned to Bravo Company were dead from wounds received in "explosive device" incidents:

  • SSgt Larry F. Hoadley, Watervliet, MI (DoW 09/01/1968)
  • Sgt Larry D. Butler, Buena Park, CA (DoW 09/02/1968)
While The Virtual Wall cannot say with certainty that SSgt Hoadley and Sgt Butler were involved in the B-12 incident it seems likely to be so.
