23 Apr 2008 Marine Dies In Vietnam A Portland Marine, Pfc. Paul Burgard, has been added to the growing list of American servicemen killed in action in Vietnam. His mother, Mrs. Phyllis E. Burgard, 6329 SE 68th Place, received word from the Defense Department last week that her son had been killed in combat Thursday 6 Jun (1968). His father, Sylvester Burgard, was recuperating from a leg amputation operation at the U. S. Veterans Hospital in Portland when he received word of his son's death. The parents are divorced. A 1967 graduate of Franklin High School, Burgard had enlisted in the Marine Corps in July, 1967. He received basic training at San Diego and combat training at Camp Pendleton CA. Father visited Pfc. Burgard was sent to Vietnam in late December. He had been home in May on emergency leave due to his father's surgery. He died 6 Jun [1968] when a helicopter in which he was riding was shot down by enemy fire near Quang Tri. He was born 6 May 1948, in Aberdeen SD, and came to Portland in 1954. He attended Atkinson Elementary School and had worked six years as a wholesalers shagger for the Oregonian and at Bazar Store. He is survived by his parents; two brothers, Douglas, 16, and Mark, 6; one sister Sehila, 13; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jake G. Olson, Britton, SD. A memorial service has been set for Wednesday, 19 June (1968), at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. A Note from The Virtual Wall The 1st Bn, 4th Marines' Command Chronology for June 1968 contains the following paragraph: The 06 June ground attack on Charlie and Delta Companies at Landing Zone LOON, which was 8 kilometers south-southeast of the Khe Sanh airfield, cost the lives of 13 Marines and sailors. Continuous mortar and 130mm artillery fire made LZ LOON untenable and a decision was made to evacuate the place. As noted in the exerpt, a CH-46 was shot down as it departed LZ LOON, killing another 13 Marines. Within an hour and a half, a search and recovery (SAR) team was inserted into the crash site. They were able to recover the bodies of eight men, but lacked the equipment needed to extract the other five men from the wreckage. Another effort later in June led to the recovery of another body, but four men had to be left entombed in the CH-46.
