06 Feb 2002 A TRIBUTE Jimmy Burchfield was a 1963 graduate of Whitewright High School and a 1967 graduate of East Texas State University. After college he was inducted to serve in the United States Army. At the age of 23, on a March day in 1969, Jimmy went into the first battle of his first war. A helicopter carried him and his squad to a Vietnamese hill. Intelligence reported there were no enemy in the area -- they were wrong. As the helicopter lifted away, the first mortars began to fall. Ten minutes into the first battle of his first war, his young life ended on Asian ground. He died in the performance of duty. Behind him, he left the abiding grief of his family and friends. "I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free; and I won't forget the men who died and gave that right to me. So I'll stand up next to you and defend her still today. Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land. GOD Bless the USA." - Lee Greenwood - These beautiful words are an inspirational reminder that without men like him, none of us would be free.
