Sp4 Richard Brush was a member of Service Battery 2nd Battalion 13th Artillery based out of Phu Loi, Vietnam. In April 1969 I served as Executive Officer, Headquarters Battery 2nd Battalion 13th Artillery, also based at Phu Loi. I am familiar with the invaluable tasks Service Battery performed for the battalion.

Service Battery used 5-ton trucks for ammunition resupply to the battalion's firing batteries. On 3 April 1969 Service Battery trucks were on a resupply detail for C Battery. A convoy of ammunition trucks was ambushed with command-detonated mines planted in the road surface. Sp4 Brush died that day from the explosion. PFC Michael Gilmore, riding in the truck with Sp4 Brush, died the following day. Additional Service Battery personnel were wounded in the encounter.

I never knew Sp4 Brush or PFC Gilmore, but am writing this from first-hand knowledge of the event. Colonel Joseph Luger and I wish to commemorate these fallen artillerymen. Without their unswerving devotion to duty, driving ammunition trucks over roads constantly mined and ambushed, the cannoneers of 2nd Battalion 13th Artillery would have been unable to continue the mission of delivering timely fire when needed by friendly ground units. Service Battery was part of the team and a major reason for the success the battalion achieved in Vietnam.

Rest in Peace, Sp4 Brush and PFC Gilmore. Your memory endures with the cannoneers of the Red Dragon Clan.
