Donald E. Boston ... You died with LTJG Daniel M. Mann that day, and RM3 Ronald K. Neal died two weeks later (21 Apr) of wounds received. You will never be forgotten. You served with others who carry your names with them for the rest of their lives. My Brother MM2 David L. Sitter carries your memories on into the future. Donald E. Boston, Ronald K. Neal, and LTJG Daniel M. Mann you gave your country the Supreme Sacrifice, for honor and bravery above and beyond the call of duty. If new medals were ever created you would get the "Citizens of the World Honor Medal". It would be the highest honor that could be bestowed upon a Sailor, Soldier, Marine, Airman, or USCGman.

Don, I grieved for you the first time in 1968, when your mother sent me a reply and a newspaper clipping of your death in response to my 1968 Christmas card to you in Sheffield. I grieved a second time when I visited your gravesite in Sheffield the following summer. I thought I had dealt with your death in the prayer I said at your gravesite, but my grief was revisited many fold, when I placed my hand on your name on the Wall about eight years later. All the bottled up pain and grief I felt flowed into the Wall and I experienced the effects of cruising in the Avanti, down Highway 80 at 85+ mph on our way to a "hootenany". Never did hear that #1 hit you and Phillips wrote for Johnny Sheffield ("I've got Cancer"). But don't worry, I've got the final line for it: "Don't you worry none, son, SMOKING CURES CANCER... " I have one more time to honor you and it will be at the USS SAINT PAUL reunion in St Louis August 2006. Curt

More childhood memories than can be counted come to the light to be relived whenever I see Don's name, or hear it mentioned. I don't think these memories will ever pass through my mind without me feeling the pain and loss of a long ago friend who was been cut down in his youth. Where would we be without the people like this young man who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice?

I am Kenneth Payne and I consider Don one of my best friends in the service. As I remember him ... He was very talented. He played the guitar and wrote songs. He made demo tapes to sent them to Nashville. While stationed at Coronado Naval Base, he came back from leave with a Studebaker Avante and this wild scheme (still in the planning stages... although he might have gone past the planning stages). He wanted to incorporate his talents and to sell shares in those talents at $100.00 a share. I was broke... didn't have the bucks but I, yeah, I would bought in to it... because I had faith in him. I was there on 7 Apr 1967.
