A memorial from a friend, |
Bill Boehme was my "stick buddy" in Flight School at Fort Wolters near Mineral Wells, Texas. That is to say that we learned to fly helicopters together. Our Instructor Pilot was Clarence "Clay" Clarkson, a civilian employee of Southern Airways which, in essence, operated the whole post on a contract basis. I remember Bill as a nice kid who never had an unkind word for anybody. It has been my understanding all these years that he died performing his duties as a pilot of a "slick" in a night extraction of troops that had come under heavy contact with the enemy on the side of a mountain in very bad weather. Even though the weather had closed in around them, he and his crew elected to try to get those grunts out of a very bad situation. Bill and his entire crew gave their last full measure of devotion to help their fellow GI's. They died heroes and should forever be remembered that way.
From his "Stick Buddy" in Flight School, |
Dear Bill, it has been 37 years today, Feb. 5, 2006, that you flew your last mission. We still miss you every day, but know that your Dad is now with you. We are all so very proud of you for giving your life for your country. With all my love, Mom
