Dear David, yesterday January 22, was the 38th anniversary date of the day you left us. By odd chance an old friend of yours tried to contact our sister that very night and mentioned to a family member the Virtual Wall that he had written on. So I tried to look you up but your name was not there. So I am posting this to let anyone who wishes to see the handsome, young face I see every day on my mantel. We all miss you and love you very much, and know you have lots of friends who feel the same way!! David was killed January 22, 1968 during the Tet offensive at Con Thien, Quang Tri Province, during a battle at the "Hill of Angels". Many lives were lost that day, but thanks to Johnny, Tom and one other man whose name I'm sorry to say I do not know but am forever grateful to ... we were able to have David's body returned to his family. Thank you all so very much!!!!

Semper Fi David Bingham and Family, The names you are looking for are: Thomas Anioulsky (now a deputy fire chief in Weymouth, Mass), John Rose (retired welder), and Danny Burchett, who together carried Dave through the mine field. Also, on January 10 1968 "Doc" Tommy Aniolsky was in a mine field saving Marines and received the Bronze Star Medal, and "Doc" James Loy, also saving Marine lives, received the Silver Star Medal posthumously. A Note from The Virtual WallThe 2/1 Marines' Command Chronology for January 1968 contains the following entry:"1420 - Carousel Foxtrot [Fox 2/1] on scheduled patrol made contact with an estimated Company of enemy. Enemy initiated firefight with command detonated TNT charge and small arms and machine gun fire. Carousel Foxtrot returned fire ... Enemy attempted to encircle lead elements of Carousel Foxtrot. Trail elements of Foxtrot and Golf lead elements countered the move and the enemy fell back. Enemy fired 60mm mortars at Carousel Golf and Foxtrot as Carousel units withdrew with casualties. Carousel units destroyed 3 enemy bunkers and one enemy 60mm mortar team. Carousel units continued to attack ... with air and artillery."Two Marines from Fox 2/1 were killed in the action and a number of others wounded. The two dead were Pfc David A. Bingham and Pfc Tom W. Simmons of Trinity, Texas. Echo 2/1st Marines lost two other Marines in the same area - GySgt Nathaniel Weathers of Cleveland, Ohio, and Cpl Richard S. Byars of Rye, Colorado. |
