A Note from The Virtual Wall

SP4 Henry C. Biggerstaff was assigned to E Battery, 41st Artillery, a quad-50 light antiaircraft unit attached to B Battery, 4th Bn, 60th Artillery, itself equipped with the dual 40mm "Dusters". In Vietnam both quad-50s and Dusters were used in an infantry support role.

He received the Silver Star for his actions. His Citation reads in part

"Biggerstaff, a gunner on a "quad 50", was defending his position against a massive ground assault launched by the Viet Cong the night of May 10, 1968. Biggerstaff and two other soldiers in his crew were thrown from their "quad 50" by the explosion that killed the other two men. ... Being grievously wounded did not sway the soldier from his counterattack against the Viet Cong. In a continued assault of small arms fire and grenades directed against him, Biggerstaff swung his "quad 50" 90 degrees, pointing his four .50 caliber machine guns downrange to the very edge of the compound that he was sworn to defend. With his final breath, the twenty-one year old soldier directed point blank "quad 50" fire in a devastating barrage that completely destroyed the enemy forces."
