Bauer, you were absolutely the happiest dude in Nam I ever knew let alone lived with. Our APC was never too crowded when you were there spreading your happiness around. Although you did play Creedance Clearwater Revival too much! You loved them to excess. But hey, you made up for that minor flaw by driving an APC like it was a limosine! You were always keeping your track ready to go and ready to fight. Too bad the NVA put a big ol' crack across the bottom with that land mine eh! You were pretty bummed, like it was an insult! But you got a brand new one, never been used or abused by anyone before. I can still picture your face when you drove that thing around, all shiny and clean. Your smile is still with me today, when I think of you bro'. I'll bet it's one of the biggest and broadest in heaven. I miss you and love you and will see you around some day, okay? Peace and joy, California Boy, 9TH INFANTRY DIVISION
The 3rd/5th Cavalry was dismounted in February, 1943, and re-organized under Infantry Tables of
Organization and Equipment. It was re-organized wholly as Infantry in July, 1945, but retained its
Cavalry designation. After Korea, the 3rd/5th Cavalry was de-activated in 1958. In 1966, it was
activated for duty with the 9th Infantry Division "Old Reliables". Upon arrival, the Black Knights
joined in the Division's first major contact of the war -- Operation Colby in 1967.
