Mannie Alfred Barber is on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Panel 12W Line 091.

Alfred,

We have never met before, but I've thought about you many times. Although we are distant cousins, I sometimes feel as if you and I are closely connected. I was born on your birthday just 10 years after you gave your life. I have this empty place in my heart, and I have always assumed it was a place that should have been filled with your presence. I believe there is a special reason that you and I share a birthday, and that is because I believe we share this unexplainable bond. I have never understood exactly why I feel this way, but I believe it is because you must be my guardian angel. Even as I write this I feel like you are watching over me and telling me that it's going to be okay and that someday we really will be able to meet face to face. Until that day comes, never think your death was in vain or for a worthless cause, and I will feel safe knowing that you're somewhere nearby watching over me.

Love,
Kristi
