Your brothers in arms from K Company, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines remember your service and honor you. You were our new Company Gunny who was on a second tour in Vietnam. You could have exercised the option to serve in a support unit for your second tour but decided to remain with us. Now you are one of our departed heroes. We who served with you during Operation Union I are honored to have known you; we will hold you in our hearts and minds forever. Semper Fidelis, Marine!

A Note from The Virtual Wall

Kilo 3/5 Marines lost at least three men on 13 May 1967:
  • GySgt Dean E. Armstrong, Atoka, OK
  • LCpl Byron A. Kielley, Seattle, WA
  • LCpl Julio V. Morales, Philadelphia, PA
Gunnery Sergeant Armstrong entered the Marines in 1950/51 and no doubt served in the Korean War. At one time he served aboard USS JUNEAU (LPD-10) and is remembered by his shipmates from that tour. Regretably The Virtual Wall does not have a listing of GySgt Armstrong's decorations and can display only the four we know he received for his service in Vietnam.

Dean Edward Armstrong,
Gunnery Sergeant, United States Marine Corps,
was buried on 24 Mar 1967 in Plot P-0-1556,
Fort Logan National Cemetery,
Denver, Colorado,
among other men of courage and integrity.
