05 Aug 2003 McComb Marine Killed WASHINGTON (AP)- The Defense Department said Monday Marine Lance Cpl. William L. Andrews of McComb, Miss., was killed in recent action in Vietnam. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Andrews of 1401 Delaware Ave., McComb. Cpl. Andrews, who had been in the Marine Corps since 1968, had been serving in Vietnam for about one month. The body will be brought to McComb Friday with Cathings Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Funeral services will be held at Thompson Baptist Church with time to be announced later. Survivors include his parents; three brothers, Julius C. Andrews Jr., Pensacola, Fla., Alvin Ray and Andy Andrews, both of McComb; one sister, Gloria Dean Andrews, McComb, and his grandmother, Mrs. L.J. Smith of Nitta Yuma. He is honored on the 3rd Battalion, 27th Marines Honor Roll Lance Corporal Andrews and I were at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina, at the same time, though in different platoons. A Note from The Virtual Wall Corporal Larry Andrews served with India Company, 3rd Bn, 27th Marines in 1968 but was killed in action during his second tour of duty. On 26 March 1970 there were 7 Marine infantry battalions operating in Quang Nam Province - 1st and 2nd Battalions, 1st Marines 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Battalions, 5th Marines 1st and 3rd Battalions, 7th Marines A review of the Command Chronologies and other available information shows that only two of these units took casualties on that day - Echo 2/1 had one man wounded by a mine, and Hotel 2/5 had one man killed and four evacuated with wounds from a mine. While The Virtual Wall prefers "hard" documentation of unit assignment, it seems most probable that Cpl Andrews died as a result of the same incident which killed Sgt Angelo R. Morales of San Jose, California.
