A Note from The Virtual Wall The 11th Engineer Battalion's Command Chronology for September 1967 contains the following entry: "9 Sept 1967: At 0945H, "D" Company's sweep team was ambushed on Route 1, YD215725 by small arms, mortar, and hand grenades. This action resulted in 3 KIAs and 7 WIAs to the sweep team plus 1 KIA and 3 WIAs on the Army's supporting truck mounted quad 50 machine gun." The four men who were killed were D Co, 11th Eng Bn LCpl Guadalupe M. Alvarez, Donna, TX LCpl John R. Vanderzicht, Pompano Beach, FL Pfc Joseph B. Sumpter, McRoberts, KY G Btry, 65th Artillery, US Army SGT James L. Tweed, Findlay, OH
