Although we never met I know you are my guardian angel and have been looking out for me these past 30 years. I have felt you with me always and am proud to say my Daddy is a hero. I tell my two girls about their Grandpa and what a great man he must have been. Thank you for giving your life for your country and for the freedom we take so much for granted. They never found that picture of me Mom sent when they recovered your belongings so I know you must have taken it with you to Heaven.
I love you Daddy!

A Note from The Virtual WallIn May 1968 the Marines staged a major offensive on Go Noi Island, which was formed by the confluence of several rivers and which had been a VC/NVA bastion for years. While the enemy's infrastructure in the area was destroyed, 52 Marines were killed in the action. Corporal Richard Abbate was one of six Marines from Mike Company, 3/27th Marines, lost on 18 May 1968:
